Organization Definition

The Center of Hazard Mitigation, Environmental Studies and Research, Cairo University - (CHMESR) is an educational, research, service and non-profit institution – affiliated with Cairo University. A decision was issued by the Minister of Higher Education No. (272) on 12th of August 2018 regarding the inclusion of both the Center for Environmental Hazard Mitigation (established in 1994) and the Center for Environmental Research and Studies (established in 1989) at Cairo University as a one-name center (Center of Hazard Mitigation, Environmental Studies and Research Cairo University, CHMESR) a specialized unit affiliated to Cairo University Administration. CHMESR works in the field of services and objectives set by its internal regulations in order to serve the environment and develop the community through the preparation of environmental and social impact assessment studies for industrial and non-industrial facilities, in addition to; conducting various environmental measurements for existing facilities in accordance to the Environment Law No. 4 of 1994 amended by Law No. 9 of 2009, as well as conducting various training courses, conferences and seminars related to the environment in order to spread environmental awareness in the community.

Future Plan

Activation of the Center's role in addressing environmental issues in fields of air and water pollution and hazardous waste disposal, as well as, environmental assessment studies and basic geological and geophysical studies for future planning in urban, agricultural, tourism and industrial expansion.

Contribution in holding seminars and conferences on environmental awareness and discussion of local issues.

Revitalization and activation of the cooperation protocols between CHMESR and the Ministry of Environment, Giza Governorate, the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.

Work on performance integration and cooperation protocols preparation in the fields of; environmental studies and hazardous materials control between CHMESR, other research centers, departments and entities related to the university, and the external research centers.

Revitalization and activation of CHMESR's role in the fields of training, counseling and raising of public awareness.

Participation in the national project for the university students’ employment.

Participation in the summer training program for university students.

Activation and revitalization of CHMESR's regional role in the fields of; conducting training, holding scientific seminars, implementing projects and transferring technology for proper environmental management of hazardous waste in accordance with Basel Convention on Dealing with Hazardous Waste.
