Chemical Analysis at the Chemical Laboratory

  • Qualitative weight analysis of particles with diameter less than 2.5 micrometers and particles with diameter less than 10 micrometers
  • ead assessment analyses in the air
  • Sulfur oxides assessment analyses in the air
  • Fallen dust analyses

Analyses

Qualitative Weight

  • All solid and liquid particles carried by the air are dealt with except for pure water, of diameter ranging from 0.005 to 100 micrometers.
  • Quartz filtration sheets are used, which are preserved in cabins and then weighed using a 5-decimal sensitive balance.

  • Analyses

    Lead

Digestion of filtration papers on which air samples are collected is carried out using nitric acid followed by the measurement of the amount of lead digested in the solution using the Inductively Coupled Plasma device (ICP).

    Analyses

    Sulfur Oxides

  • 47 mm Whatman filtration paper is used in the process of digesting and extracting sulfur oxides from air followed by converting them into sulfate and measuring their quantity using ionic separation device, Dionex brand, from Thermoscientific Co.
  • Sulfur oxides are measured in sequential samples, measured daily, as well as samples measured monthly.

  • Analyses

    Soot

  • Whatman filter paper is used with a diameter of 47 millimeters.
  • The soot amount is measured by light reflection; of light falling on the filtration paper.
  • Smoke Stain Reflectometer device is used for this purpose.

  • Analyses

    Nitrogen Oxides

  • Nitrogen oxides are measured in sequential samples, measured daily, as well as, samples measured monthly.
  • Teflon filter paper is used with pores of diameter 1 to 2 micrometers, or a 40-Whatman filter paper made of cellulose is used.
  • The estimation method depends on converting nitrogen oxides into nitrate oxide by reduction.
  • Nitrate interacts with other elements to create colored ones measured by the spectrophotometer in the laboratory, of Agilent Cary 60 UV-Vis brand.

  • Dust Fall

An international standard method of collecting, analyzing and measuring dust is followed using plastic containers to collect gravity-driven dust.

    Cations and Anions

  • Positive and negative ions are measured in dust samples, collected by gravity.
  • The positive ions measured are sodium, potassium and calcium.
  • The negative ions measured are fluoride, chloride, nitrites, phosphates and sulfates.

  • Quality Assurance and Control

    • Analysis of the qualitative weight of particles with diameter less than 2.5 micros and particles with diameter less than 10 micrometers
    • Lead assessment analysis in the air
    • Analysis of the assessment of sulfur oxides in the air
    • Analysis of fallen dust
